As a child actor, he played the role of The Artful Dodger in the London production of Oliver.
He played congas at the sessions for George Harrison's first solo album. His part didn't make the cut, but he became known for working with Harrison and soon became the drummer for Genesis.
He joined Genesis in 1970 when he answered an ad they placed in Melody Maker magazine.
As a result of a viral infection he got in 2001, he is deaf in his left ear.

When lead singer Peter Gabriel left Genesis, they auditioned a bunch of singers before giving the job to Collins, who was their drummer. (thanks, Jayanth - Torrance, CA)

Collins has appeared in several movies, including "Hook," and starred(!) in "Buster," where he played a big-time thief with a heart of gold. The film was a flop, but Collins made two songs for the soundtrack that became hits, "Two Hearts" and "Groovy Kind of Love."
- Andy, Arlington, VA
Collins has also won an Oscar for Best Original Song, for "You'll Be in My Heart" from the Disney movie "Tarzan." He had been previously nominated twice for "Two Hearts" and "Against All Odds" (from the movie of the same name).
