Bon Iver's Justin Vernon Revives Volcano Choir Project
... (Radio.com) Long before he was winning GRAMMY awards and collaborating with Jay-Z and Kanye under the moniker Bon Iver, Justin Vernon was making music with fellow Wisconsin indie rockers Collections of Colonies of Bees under the name Volcano Choir. Now after being on hiatus since their 2009 debut, Unmap, the experimental pop band has announced a new album set for a September release titled Repave. The first single, "Byegone," was unveiled today (June 17). For those who are fans of Bon Iver's quiet and haunting songs, Volcano Choir's music will be right up your alley but with a much richer and louder sound. The music from 2009′s Unmap showcased Vernon's unique vocal delivery juxtaposed with lush and textured post-rock a la Band of Horses and Gayngs. Based on "Byegone," Vernon and his friends in Bees have not skipped a beat in their four year absence. Repave is scheduled to hit stores on September 3 via Jagjaguwar. Bon Iver is the name of the Justin Vernon-led indie-folk band. Live, Vernon is joined by Sean Carey (drums, vocals, piano), Michael Noyce (vocals, baritone guitar, guitar) and Matthew McCaughan (bass, drums, vocals).
The band name is derived from the French phrase, "bon hiver," which means "good winter." Although the correct French spelling for "good winter" is "bon hiver," Justin preferred "iver," since the proper spelling reminded him too much of "liver," where he had suffered complications while suffering with mononucleosis.
Justin Vernon wrote and recorded the first Bon Iver album, For Emma, Forever Ago, after retreating to his father's isolated log cabin in north-east Wisconsin following the break up of a relationship and a former band (DeYarmond Edison), plus a bout of mononucleosis.
Vernon initially released For Emma, Forever Ago independently. The album soon caught the attention of numerous influential music websites, prompting serious record label interest. Bon Iver ultimately signed with Jagjaguwar Records, who officially released For Emma, Forever Ago in February 2008.
In 2009, Bon Iver teamed up with St. Vincent in order to record "Rosyln" for the The Twilight Saga: New Moon film soundtrack.
In 2010, Bon Iver worked with rapper, Kanye West, on his fifth album, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. Justin Vernon sings on two tracks on the record, "Monster" and "Lost In The World," the latter of which heavily samples Bon Iver track, "Woods."
Bon Iver's self-titled sophomore album was recorded in an old veterinary clinic in Fall Creek, Wisconsin, purchased and transformed into a studio by Justin Vernon in 2008. The album was released in June 2011 and peaked at #2.
Bon Iver front man, Justin Vernon, started dating the Alt-Country singer-songwriter, Kathleen Edwards in 2011.
Justin Vernon's favorite song is Indigo Girls' "Fugitive." He loves it so much, he got the lyrics "I said, 'Remember this how it should be'" from the track tattooed on his chest. Further tattoos include an extract from a letter written to Justin by his father on his underarm, the outline of Wisconsin on his chest and a row of elemental symbols on his forearm.
