Manager Andrew Loog Oldham publicized The Stones by asking "Would you let your daughter marry a Rolling Stone?" He was positioning them as bad boys as opposed to the goody-goody Beatles. Contrary to popular belief, The Beatles and The Rolling Stones were actually friends. Though at the time, The Stones were illustrated as being the anti-Beatles for publicity, the two bands were on very good terms. They even attribute some of their early accomplishments to the other; for instance, The Stones got their first recording contract from Decca on the suggestion of George Harrison to Decca's head man. The Beatles admired the Stones for their refusal to wear the matching stage suits that the Beatles dawned to win affection from the fans, and Brian Jones' ability at playing the harmonica. (thanks, Emily - Philadelphia, PA)
Piano player Ian Stewart, considered the "6th Stone," was not an official member of the group because manager Andrew Loog Oldham felt he didn't fit the Stones image. He died of a heart attack in 1985.
In 1968, The Stones taped a British TV special called Rock and Roll Circus. It featured music and circus performances, with guests Jethro Tull, John Lennon, Taj Mahal, and The Who, among others. Lennon's first performance without the Beatles, it never aired on TV, but was released on video in 1995.
Bill Wyman has a restaurant in London called Sticky Fingers.
Their long hair was considered outrageous in 1963. They took out a Christmas ad in a paper saying "Best wishes to all the starving hairdressers and their families."
Jagger and Richards did a lot of drugs. Brian Jones did enough to kill him, but Bill Wyman and Charlie Watts stayed mostly clean.
The Stones are named after Muddy Waters' "Rollin' Stone Blues." Blues artists like Waters had a strong influence on The Stones.
They almost became a Rock and Roll casualty in 1963 when their van skidded off a bridge, but it didn't flip over. Their road manager and piano player Ian Stewart was driving.
Brian Jones was found dead in his swimming pool on July 3, 1969. The coroner's report listed "death by misadventure." He had major drug problems and left the band a few weeks earlier.
When Mick Taylor left in 1975, The Stones considered Jeff Beck, Wayne Perkins, Havey Mandel, Rory Gallagher, and Peter Frampton before deciding on Ron Wood.
Richards was arrested for heroin possession in 1977. As part of his sentence, he played 2 shows for blind children in Toronto with The New Barbarians, a group he formed with Ron Wood, Stanley Clarke, Bobby Keys, Joseph Modeliste, and Ian McLagan. Richards was facing a long jail sentence but got off easy. He thinks the judge went easy on him after hearing from a blind girl who Richards helped go to Stones shows.
Their 1981 world tour was the first tour to be sponsored. Jovan perfume paid them $4 million. Kimo Kekeahuna-Vail, the Hawaiian Kahuna, shaman and impresario, served as executive producer of the tour and convinced Mick Jagger and The Stones to take on a sponsorship. Kahuna never sponsored another Rock act because, as he said... "How can you top touring with the gods." Kahuna followed up with award winning tours sponsorships with Julio Iglesias/Coca-Cola and then Willie Nelson/Wrangler Jeans, creating the genre of tour sponsorship. (thanks, Kahuna - Maui, HI)
In 1983 Jagger was commissioned to write his autobiography. After the first manuscript, he gave back his advance and quit the project.
Most of their songs were credited to Jagger/Richards. This angered Mick Taylor and Bill Wyman, who did not receive writing credit for their contributions. Ron Wood got occasional credits.
The Stones did not appear as a group at Live Aid, but Jagger did duets with David Bowie and Tina Turner, and Richards and Wood played with Bob Dylan.
They are the highest earning rock band in history. Their concerts have grossed over $750 million.
It is rumored that Bill Wyman coined the term "Groupie" during their 1965 Australian tour.
In 1971, the powers that be behind the production of A Clockwork Orange briefly toyed with the idea of casting Jagger in the lead role as Alex and having the rest of the Stones along as his "droogs." Yeah, that could have been Mick sitting their with his eyeballs propped open screaming "Me glazzies!"
Jagger was knighted in 2002. Richards thought it was very hypocritical of him to accept the honor, since the Stones have always been critical of the British monarchy and English law.
Jagger (on their music): "It's a noise we make. That's all. You could be kind and call it music." (thanks, Brett - Edmonton, Canada)
Before joining The Stones, Brian Jones used the stage name Elmo Lewis. He was in the duo Lewis and Ponds with Paul Jones, who used the name "Paul Pond." Paul Jones was offered the job of Stones lead singer, but turned it down. (thanks, whitney - Houston, TX, for above 2)
In 2002, The Stones played a private concert for a Texas investor named David Bonderman, who also hired John Mellencamp and Robin Williams to perform. The show was in honor of his 60th birthday, and The Stones' fee was $7 million.
They were the headliners of the most-attended concert in Canadian history. They headlined the SARS benefit show in Toronto in July, 2003. Some of the supporting bands in the lineup included AC/DC, Rush, and the Guess Who. (thanks, Kyle - Wingham, Ontario, Canada)
Their famous tongue logo was inspired by the Indian Hindu goddess Kali The Destroyer. It was designed by John Pasche, who was a student at the Royal College of Art in London when he got a gig designing a poster for The Stones 1970 European tour. Mick Jagger was wowed by the poster, so he asked Pasche to create a logo for their new record label. Jagger suggested Kali as a starting point, and Pasche incorporated Mick's mouth into the design. The logo first appeared on the inner sleeve of the Sticky Fingers album. The cover of that album was designed by Andy Warhol, who is sometimes mistakenly credited with creating the lips logo.
Jagger (1983): "I'm totally anti-nostalgia; I never listen to old Rolling Stones records. I'm not really interested in them. They're funny, sometimes, to hear." (thanks, Bertrand - Paris, France)
Mick Jagger and Keith Richards grew up together in Dartford, Kent, in England. They went to the same primary school together (very similar to children's' daycare) but parted when they went on to different grammar schools. They met up again in their late teens at a train station, when Keith noticed Jagger carrying some blues records under his arm. Blues, which were inaccessible in England at the time, were Mick and Keith's mutual passion.
The Stones' most infamous drug bust occurred at Redlands, Keith Richards' English estate. Richards was holding a house party with a large number of guests, of whom was Mick Jagger and his girlfriend at the time, Marianne Faithfull. (George Harrison also attended, but left conveniently before the police arrived.) Mick and Keith were arrested after amounts of LSD and other drugs were found in their possession. They were both sentenced with significant jail time, but their charges were dismissed after a newspaper editor published an article condoning the court for issuing unfairly harsh punishments for a relatively minor offense, with an alleged bias against their growing fame. (thanks, Emily - Philadelphia, PA, for above 2)
They were inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame in January 1989. In his acceptance speech, Jagger honored 2 people who were not presently with the band: Brian Jones and Ian Stewart.
Ron Wood's brother Ted was in the band The Temperance Seven, who had a hit with "You're Driving Me Crazy" in 1961.
Jagger was knighted in 2003 for "services to popular music." (thanks, Bertrand - Paris, France, for above 3)
The Rolling Stones don't go on tour without their snooker table. In addition, the rock stars asked for video games and a ping pong table in their USA '97-'98 rider. For the 2005 "A Bigger Bang" tour the band has dropped video games for watching cricket on satellite or cable TV. The latter rider also reveals what names the rock singers give to their dressing rooms backstage: Mick Jagger's is "Workout," Charlie Watts has "Cotton Club," Ron Wood is in "Recovery" and Keith has "Camp X-Ray."
Comments:
me to care, but to me they were the
greatest. Keith and Mick- Mick Taylor
Especially Mick Taylor he was what
Eric Clapton was to Cream as Mick Taylor
was to the Stones. But even after Taylor,
they are still rocking in their 60's
I read in an article back in the 60's
interlaced with hundreds of articles
on the Beatles, how the stones were good,
but they probably wouldn't be around for
more than a couple of years. Well that
makes them the Greatest, longest lasting Flash in the pan band in history. I wonder if the author of that article ever looked back at what
he wrote and regretted writing such miserable
crap. If you want to put down the stones, it
will bring out the fighting side of me.
They are the best
then 25 yrs ago i discovered the cocteau twins-coincidentally-a band robert plant loves -and once u discover the cocteau twins then all other music sounds so crude and ugly by comparison-so they are my favourite band and have been for 25 yrs now-but on the subject of greatest band ever-the most popular and influential-the beatles-are most accessible-most popular and most widely known and loved and have the most successful ever performer and song-writing partnership-paul mc'cartney was worth 900 million dollars or pounds-which is staggering-personally i never liked his solo stuff and thought he was weaker than lennon in the beatles-the stones played to about 1.5 million people in brazil -setting a world record-they had about as many hits as the beatles-and inspired virtually all rockers since 1963 whereas the beatles inspired all popsters since 1962.
zep-they where the prog rock/metal gods who have been imitated by a raft of bands like ac/dc queen etc -the stones were imitated by aerosmith etc and ive seen more jagger impersonators dancing at parties than u can count-i wanted to be mick jagger for 20 yrs myself lol-the beatles have been impersonated by numerous bands also. im just proud they are all english-personally i love nick drake mmmm i even like some american stuff also-like -dylan who is a genius and the hugely influential and wonderful velvet underground.
so how can all u passionate people be so certain of your conviction as to whether the stones or the beatles or led zep are the greatest band ever?its a 3 way tie i think-but in popularist terms its the beatles-in charisma/notoriety/longevity/audience size terms its the stones-and in terms of mass appeal without using singles/tv appearances/videos etc it is led zep-who had 20 million applications for their reformation concert in london a yr ago-which is mind-blowing and more than the stones/u2/bowie/jackson/dylan etc could get between them-in summary its like comparing apples and oranges
On an excellent site called,The Evolution Of Rock Bass Playing McCartney Style by Dennis Alstrand Stanley Clarke,Will Lee,Billy Sheehan,Sting,George Martin, and John Lennon are all quoted saying what a great, melodic, influential bass guitar player Paul McCartney has always been! The 1992 Rolling Stone Album Guide calls Paul a remarkable bass player and rightfully calls John &Paul the 2 greatest song writers in rock history! Both Phil Collins and Max Weinberg both Beatles fans and both praise Ringo's drumming and Phil Collins says that Ringo's great drumming on A Day In The Life can't even be repeated even by him! Also on Rankopedia The Beatles are # 1 Greatest Rock Band,# 1 Greatest Most Innovative Rock Band,John &Paul are # 1 Greatest Rock Song Writers,John &Paul are on The Greatest Rock Male Vocalist list, and Paul McCartney is # 2 after John Enwistle as Greatest Rock Bass Players,John Paul Jones is # 6,and Bill Wynman is # 20! And on Digitaldreamdoor where many musicians post,The Beatles are # 1 Greatest Rock Artists,John &Paul are # 1 Greatest Rock Song Writers, they are both on The Greatest Rock Male Vocalists list, and Paul McCartney is # 8 out of 100 Greatest Rock Bass Players,John Paul Jones is # 21,and Bill Wynman is # 95! George Harrison is # 54 On The Greatest Rock Guitarists out of over 100.
And there are many music professors teaching music courses at good universities on the brilliance of The Beatles especially of John & Paul, including by award winning music professor and composer Dr.Glen Gass, who has been teaching a course on The Beatles and rock music at Indiana University since 1982. On his web site for his course it says the main purpose of this course is to get students to have a better appreciation of this extraordinary group and their remarkable recordings. Dr.Gary Kendal's Beatles course is the most requested course at North Western University. And a music professor by the last name of Heinonen teaches a Beatles course at JYVASKYLA University in Finland, and the university of California also teaches a Beatles course etc. Also check out Keno's Classic Rock n Roll Site he also runs a Rolling Stones & John Lennon fan site. And he made a Top 10 List and voted and the fans voted. He voted John &Paul # 2 after Bob Dylan as Greatest Rock Song Writers, the fans voted them # 1! He voted Paul McCartney # 2 after John Entwistle as Greatest Rock Bass Player, the fans voted Paul # 3. He voted John Lennon # 2 after Keith Richards as Greatest Rock Rhythm Guitarist, and the fans voted John in a tie with Jimi Hendrix and Brian Jones at # 4! He voted John Lennon # 1 in a tie with Elvis as Greatest Male Rock Vocalist and the fans voted John # 1,he voted Paul # 6 and the fans voted him # 7. Ken says Damn The Beatles were one great group in his review of The Beatlesalbum 1967-1970,and he also says that John on Get Back showed why he should have played lead guitar more often because he did such a good job! He also said that John on their hard rocking great 1968 single Revolution, played one of the first and best acid guitar parts. And he also said that John played a pretty good slide guitar on George's For Your Blue. And he says in his review of The Beatles 1962-1966,that if you don't love or at least like The Beatles and their music than you are not a true rock fan and more than likely will never get it.And Brian Wilson said on a 1995 Nightline TV Beatles tribute show, that Sgt.Pepper is the single greatest album he ever heard, and he played With A Little Help From Friends on the piano and he said I just love this song. He also said he thinks John Lennon &Paul McCartney were the 2 greatest song writers of the 20th century! He also said when he first heard The Beatles great 1965 album Rubber Soul, that he was blown away by it,he said all of the songs flowed together and it was pop music but folk rock at the same time, and this is what he couldn't believe. He said this inspired him to make Pet Sounds. Elton John said in a 1991 CBS morning news show, when he was asked who he musically admires,he said You can taljk about your Rogers & Hammerstein but for the quality of quanity songs that Lennon & McCartney did in that short period of time, they were the 2 greatest song writers of the 20th century! Most music artists want to believe and want the public to believe that *their* the greatest so when they say other music artists are the greatest it really means a lot! The Beatles are also the most covered music artists of all time with everyone from Motown, jazz, classical, and even heavy metal music recording their great diverse music! And in 2001 VH1 had a panel of well known musicans and music critcs, that voted The Beatles The Greatest Rock Band Ever, and in 2004 Rolling Stone did the same thing and several people said on message boards that Rolling Stone had a recent pael poll like this and The Beatles were voted # 1 again and for damn great reasons too! Nobody created as much innovative, creative, quality, critically acclaimed, popular diverse songs and albums in such a short amazing period of time as The Beatles and thats why most people know that The Beatles Are The Greatest Rock Band That Ever Was Or Will Be!!! Oh and A Day's Night is a great pop rock album!!! And even Bob Dylan said decades ago about The Beatles early music, that their chords were outrageous, and the harmonies were wonderful and they were doing things in music that nobody had done before, and music critics of The London Times were praising their interesting and unusual chords that they used even in early songs like She Loves You &I Want To Hold Your Hand. Which were not as simple as they seemed and had clever subtleties in them.Infact Bob Dylan said in a Rolling Stone interview this Spring that he's in awe of Paul McCartney and he said he's the only one he's in awe of. He said that Paul has the melody,he has the rhthym and he can sing the ballad very good, and he can play any instrument.
He also said there were no better singers than John Lennon & Paul McCartney and he said if George wasn't stuck in the shadow behind John & Paul and he said who wouldn't get stuck,he would have emerged as a great song writer in his own right anyway.
And by the way I have read some people saying on message boards that they don't think The Rolling Stones were the best technical musicians, and many even some fans have said they haven't done anything good in 35 years, and that their overrated and I have also found many people saying they hate or don't like The Rolling Stones and many people say the only Rolling Stones song they like is Paint It Black! Oh and by the way,in every major poll of The Beatles vs The Rolling Stones,The Beatles always win as # 1 even on sites and message boards that are not Beatles fan sites! And when we look at the solo career comparison of Mick Jagger's and Keith Richards solo careers with John,Paul & George's,the facts are John Lennon's first brilliant solo album, and his second great album Imagine are rightfully critically acclaimed, and I love John's Walls & Bridges album and Paul McCartney's first solo album McCartney is very good, and he played every instrument all by himself at age 27,and he played so many different instruments great! Wings 1975 Venus & Mars is a great rock album too!
And he and Denny Laine are the only musicians on Paul's great 1973 Band On The Run album, which is critically acclaimed and popular, and he played every instrument by himself again on McCartney 2 in 1979,and most of the instruments on his 1997 Flaming Pie album, and his 2 recent acclaimed popular albums,Chaos And Creation In The Backyard, and Memory Almost Full. And John Paul Jones,David Gilmore,John Bonham & Pete Townsend all played on 2 songs with Paul and Wings on the last Wings album Back To The Egg, in 1979,and they played in the last Wings concert too in December 1979. You know I have found over 50 former Beatles haters on many message boards and web sites that are noe HUGE Beatles fans and many say they are now their favorite band and that they were the Greatest Band Ever! I didn't communicate with these people but they said in their posts that they had a lot of inaccurate misperceptions of The Beatles and they hadn't even heard most of The Beatles great songs and albums!
Most people don't hate The Beatles in the first place, most people of all ages all around the world love or at least like their music, but it's really something for former haters to turn into big fans and it just goes to show how Great The Beatles music is!!!!
But I know this is a Stones page, so let me say-the Stones rock!
The Beatles made pop/rock and the Rolling Stones made blues/rock 'n' Roll ... It's like comparing Michael Jackson to Prince ... or David Bowie to Queen ... They're both equally good! STOP THE FIGHT!
And Marino who? Yes, his opinion matters more because he was in Mahogany Rush. Get real. No one cares about his opinions on the Stones.
And I saw Navarro wearing a Stones shirt on one of those stupid VH1 shows. He either doesn't dislike them as much as you say, or is a moron who wears a band's merchandise that he hates.
By the way, the Stones rock and always will.
- Tanya, Rotterdam, Netherlands
Tanya have you ever thought that it could be Beatles fans coming on this board and voicing their opinion, about the Stones..Beatles thing. It seems to me that Beatles, and other bands, fans are more concerned about the Stones than the other way round
I've always been a 'tied and died' Stones fan. I've grown old with them In my OPINION they truly are the greatest band in the world.
"Its Only Rock n Roll"
I agree that no one knows who the greatest band is.
And i have my likes and dislikes..
But really guys..
Its only rock n roll
And we all like it.
So just chill, and enjoy the music
You peeps should put some clothes on and leave your house now and again;)
Led Zeppelin are the obvious 2nd. They made concert records in their time and would probably have outsold the Beatles if they had gone for another 5 or 10 years. The were the kings of hard rock and blues rock. They were extremely diverse musicians in their own right. They could tackle any genre they wanted.
The Rolling Stones are probably not the
"!!BEST!!" band for no.3 postition but they are by far the best touring band. They are kings of rock for sure but aren't my favourite. (None of these bands are in my favourite order but in common sense order LOL).
ACDC probably would tie with Rolling Stones because they may not out tour them but they ravage them in album sales. I mean most of the Stones album were double albums and they had so many albums. ACDC are kings of rock in their own right, they should be no.3.
Black Sabbath are pioneers with Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple and werer amazing, enough said.
U2 probably deserve no.5 but Black Sabbath were to influential. U2 have very prolific instrumental and synthesising skills and to outsold the Stones. They out earn the Stones aswell and probably out tour them nearly, maybe just less ticket sales.
Deep Purple were the influential ones along with Sabbath and Zeppelin, but werent BIG like Acca Dacca so the deserve a stable no.7.
ACDC probably deserve to take the Stones nspot but I have decided to miss that.
1) beatles
2) rolling stones
3) Led Zeppelin
4) AC/DC
5) The Who
6) The Guess Who
7) Bachman Turner Overdrive
oh yeah, and Alex from Newcastle Sympathy for the devil is AWESOME!!! How can u not like it ?!?!?!?!?!
Thanks for playing "As Tears Go By" Mick : - )
I can just imagine what the critics will have to say about that! I say ____ em.
You want Beatles rockers? Try Helter Skelter, Revolution, Yer Blues, Birthday, Come Together, Back to the USSR, I am the Walrus, and many others. The Rolling Stones are NO match to The Beatles!
This is my list:
1.Beatles
2.Rolling Stones
3.Yardbirds/Zeppelin
2. The Rolling Stones
3. Bob Dylan
All three of them have completely changed music and the way people think. Each of them were influnential in different ways, and they'll all have an important role in music history.
none of those bands are better than the other, the all played fantastic music, but you can't be biast and pick just one.
(but if you had to, the beatles kick so much ass)
they have a blues touch to them
i used to think that they were dumb
but then i just litsened to brown sugar nad fell in love with it

Greatest Group: Buddy Holly & the Crickets (Remember, he wrote all his own songs?...HE influenced the Beatles!... had acoustic guitars, changed rock music in BIG ways before the Beatles even came along. They stood on his shoulders, pretty much.)
Greatest Popular Style Influence: The Rolling Stones
My Favorite? ... I love the Beatles...
This Stones vs. Beatles thing has been going on ever since both bands were popular in 1964 and the Stones introduced themselves as "The Greatest Rock'n Roll Band in the World!" and it's kind of interesting to compare because of their similar careers...
Paul Mc Cartney is the first to say that at one time the Beatles were just one of a thousand bands hoping it would be them who broke through and in the final analysis, he didn't know WHY it was them who succeeded: "It was something outside the music. I went way beyond that!" that caused them to be as popular as they were.
I think what the Stones were trying to do at first was to produce authentic sounding rhythm and blues music. Someting that sounded like American music.
I believe they did THAT better than the Beatles. But then, the Beatles really weren't trying to do that. They were putting their own mark on everything and their music was more along the lines influenced by artists like Roy Orbison ("From Me To You") and Buddy Holly ("I'll follow the sun") and even when they did a Chuck Berry song "Roll Over Beethoven" they were trying to put their own style stamp on it.
The Stones moved beyond just blues and became more like the Beatles as they would use whatever contemporary musical influences were around at a given time and try to incorporate them into their music. After the rhythm and blues thing, the got into Donovan style with "Lady Jane" (remmeber "Guinevere" from "Sunshine Superman"?) and used marimbas ala "Stop in the Name of Love" on "Under My Thumb" and afew tunes on "Between the Buttons"... then the Band and Dylan were a dominant style after that and the Stones did "Beggar's Banquet" all the way where they did reggae with "Black and Blue" (a commercial bomb) and funk with "It's Only Rock'n Roll"; one of only two real rock'n roll songs on the record.
The Beatles sound is still influencing people to this very day, although I don't think Mc Cartney by himself has been nearly as big. IN my opinion though; I'd say the Stones had more people trying to incorporate elements of their music than anyone from about 1970 till maybe 1982. Even today... let's face it: Aerosmith is a Stones knock off; not only the music but the style... all that.
But as we see here: all musicians borrow. All musicians rewrite songs that have previously been done with maybe only a little chord tweaked here or there and different lyrics.
Who had the biggest or longest lasting influence?
We'll ALWAYS be talking about that. That's one of the things that makes it all fun!!!
But, why rank the Stones over the Beatles? I love the Stones a whole lot, but they are chauvinists, and lots of their lyrics are just plain rude. Although, I do really like their music, and some of the songs' lyrics. But, I just wanted to say that.
1- Led Zeppelin
2- The Beatles
3- Black Sabbath
4- Van Halen
5- AC/DC
But Brian Jones did NOT leave the Rolling Stones. He was kicked out by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards due in part to his inability to control his drug and alcohol intake.
Brian died in very suspicious circumstances and and it is now widely believed that he was murdered. I believe this to be true.
BRIAN JONES WAS MURDERED
Ian talks about his 3 or 4 blatant attempts to write a pop song, and also the ones he most connected with, including "Locomotive Breath."
This Kentucky singer/songwriter's hits include "She Couldn't Change Me" (recorded by Montgomery Gentry) and "It Ain't Easy Being Me."
The lead singer/lyricist for Anberlin breaks down "Impossible" and covers some tracks from their 2012 album Vital.
The Nails lead singer Marc Campbell talks about those 44 women he sings about over a stock Casio keyboard track. He's married to one of them now - you might be surprised which.
