| Exposé began as a project of Miami-based producer/songwriter Lewis A. Martinee. In 1984, he hired Sandra "Sandee" Casanas, Alejandra "Ale" Lorenzo, and Laurie Miller to be in the group's lineup. The next year, they had a club-dance hit (which also got decent airplay) with the song "Point of No Return" (with Lorenzo on lead); this song was followed by 1986's "Exposed to Love" (also with Lorenzo on lead). In 1986, their second club hit attracted the attention of Arista Records. Just before signing with Arista, Casanas was fired, and Lorenzo quit to pursue other ambitions; they were replaced by Jeanette Jurado and Gioia Bruno. Before the group completed their debut album Exposure (released in early 1987), Miller left due to personal and business problems to pursue a solo career; she was replaced by Ann Curless. |
| Casanas later went on to have a moderately successful solo career in Miami; Miller formed a production company and does various projects in show business; but Lorenzo dropped out of show business after leaving Expose. |
| Toward the end of 1987, Expose became the first group to have 4 Top 10 singles from a debut album. |
| Around 1988, Bruno decided to use only her first name professionally. |
| In the middle of 1990, Bruno began having throat problems, which led the group to take some time off work from their schedule. Soon, it was discovered that she had a benign tumor in her vocal cords. People waited a long time for her to recover, but her health only worsened; she was replaced by Kelly Moneymaker in 1992. Moneymaker was never given a chance to sing lead on any of the group's songs. In 1997, Bruno fully recovered from her throat tumor and began singing again. |
| In 1995, the group sang the Diane Warren-penned "I'll Say Good-Bye for the Two of Us" for the soundtrack of the film Free Willy 2: The Adventure Home. That same year, the song was issued on their album "Greatest Hits." Toward the end of 1995, Arista dropped the group and the members disbanded in early 1996 to pursue solo careers. | The group and its music were among the first of the Cuban-influenced pop bands that came out of Miami during the late 1980s and impacted the music industry, helping other such bands achieve mainstream success. Ironically, none of the women in the band are Cuban-Americans from Miami. Jurado (who fronted most of their major hits) is Mexican-American, Bruno is an Italian immigrant, and Ann Curless is a natural blond from upstate New York. (thanks, Mike - santa barbara, CA) |
