Artistfacts:
His backstage demands include The New York Times, broccoli, red wine, and American Spirit cigarettes. He does not smoke.
Real name is James Jewell Osterberg, Jr. In high school, he was the drummer for a band called The Iguanas, so when he was a member of the band The Prime Movers, his bandmates gave him the name "Iggy." His first stage name was Iggy Stooge, which became the basis for his band, The Stooges. With The Stooges and as a solo act, he became one of the most influential and authentic Punk performers.
He was raised in a trailer park in Ypsilanti, Michigan.
Pop is famous for bleeding on stage. The first time he cut himself was by accident when he fell on a drink glass. The crowd went nuts, so he made the blood part of his show. He was also one of the first to incorporate stage dives and crowd surfing into his shows.
He was addicted to heroin for much of the '70s.
David Bowie produced his albums Raw Power, The Idiot, and Lust For Life. He toured with Bowie in 1976-1977, and helped him write "China Girl" in 1983.
He got the name "Pop" because he once shaved his eyebrows for a show, making him look like a friend with the last name Popp who had recently undergone chemotherapy and was eyebrowless himself.
When Jim Morrison died, Iggy was considered as his replacement in The Doors. The remaining Doors decided to continue on as a trio, so this never materialized. (thanks, Bertrand - Paris, France, for above 2)

Comments:
I have great respect for the Stooges, who laid the foundation for punk and other hard rock genres as early as '67. It's shame they aren't recognized for they pioneering work. Many punk/alternative rock musicians and critics call Funhouse and Raw Power two of the greatest albums of all time (which I think is definitely a stretch, but it means a lot coming from stars such as Kurt Cobain). The reason I post this here is that a page for said band does not even exist!

Ziggy is a pastiche of many rockstars. "he played it left hand" is obviously a Hendrix reference. Bowie was painting us a picture of a rockstar imbued with ALL of the qualities of ALL of the best and most talented; hell he's supposed to be from Mars, yunno?

Apologies for the seeming digression in subject last post...I believe "Lust for Life" was co-written and produced by Bowie as well.

While most of Velvet Goldmine's Kurt Wild is based on Iggy Pop (especially his incendiary performance of Pop's 'T.V. Eye'. Literally) his "going bonkers" while hearing an electric guitar as the result of shock therapy is based on Lou Reed, and his having been found in bed is (allegedly) based on Mick Jagger.
- Rafi, Minneapolis, MN
In the movie Velvet Goldmine, his parallel character went through electric shock therapy when he was a teenager for having sex with his older brother, which caused him to "go bonkers" whenever he heard an electric guitar later in life. Does this have any basis in fact?

Actually I've read somewhere that MArc Bolan from T. Rex was the inspiration behind Ziggy Stardust. Should one of them be left-handed we'd know the answer, since Ziggy plays his guitar left hand.

... and of course, He's the inspiraton behind Ziggy Stardust
- Gregmon, Intelbuquerque, NM
He was known to do the first ever stage-dive
- Josh, Hauula, HI
China Girl was cowritten in 1977 for Iggy's album "The Idiot". If you like violent music, download the songs off "Funhouse", the Stooges second album.
