When Peter Gabriel left in 1975, they went on a frustrating search for a new lead singer, which ended when they realized drummer Phil Collins had a theater background and could sing.
Gabriel and Collins both had tremendous success as solo artists, and Rutherford did very well as leader of Mike And The Mechanics.
One of the names they considered was "Gabriel's Angels." Their manager gave them the name Genesis.
Their first album was called From Genesis To Revelation. It sold about 650 copies, partly because record stores thought it was a religious album and placed it accordingly.
In an attempt to get more publicity, Gabriel started wearing costumes on stage. It worked, as newspapers started writing about the band and they became famous for their stage show.
Before the departure of Gabriel, Genesis was a Progressive Rock band. When they switched to a Pop sound with Collins as singer, they had enormous mainstream success.
On their 1974 tour, they played their double album The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway from start to finish, with Gabriel changing costumes several times.
Original lead guitarist Anthony Phillips was replaced by Steve Hacket because Anthony was suddenly struck with horrible stage fright. (thanks, matt - galloway, NJ)
In 2007, Genesis (with Collins as lead singer) got back together for the "Turn It On Again" tour. Their last tour was in 1992, and the last time they played together was at Gabriel's wedding in 2002.
From about 1978 to present, Genesis were a trio featuring Collins, Banks, and Rutherford. To compensate for the fact that Phil Collins had to drum AND sing, drummers Bill Bruford and later Chester Thompson were added for tours and gigs. The band acknowledged the fact that they were a trio on their 1978 album ...And Then They Were Three. (thanks, Aram - Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina)
I liked "Throwing It All Away" the best. I wish their was a posting on this song on Songfacts! - Tom, Marble Falls, AR
Genesis is one of my favorite groups... while I did enjoy some of their songs from the 80's, I particularly enjoyed their 70's music (including the 1980 "Duke" album)...thanks, Genesis - David, Broomall, PA
I salute the musicianship of all the members of Genesis, but (as a drummer myself) I especially want to pay tribute to Phil Collins as a drummer (especially in the 70's)...I feel that his time signatures and creativity provided "flavor" to Genesis' music...thanks, Phil - David, Broomall, PA
Mike: I agree with you about Steve Hackett. In fact I consider his departure, even more than Gabriel's, to be the band's "jumping-the-shark" event. I don't dislike their later material (at least not most of it), but they definitely weren't the same after Hackett left. - Joshua, Twin Cities, MN
this band is great! it is the single most underrated band of all time! - Jeanette, Irvine, CA
Nir Zidkyahu played the drums after Collins left, Nick D'Virgilio also played drums on several songs on Calling All Stations. Chester Thompson and Daryl Stuermer stayed with Phil Collins. - Bryan, Ft Lauderdale, FL
Chester Thompson replaced Phil afterwards, and they also used Daryl Sturer(sp?) They(Phil, Mike and Tony) never formally recognized them as band members, but always toured with them. Phil did play drums on occasion as they also used a drum machine. - chris, frederick, MD
I always felt Steve Hackett was the premier guitarist in this band, and did (does) not get enough recognition (IMHO) - Mike, Wash DC, United States
For more information on Genesis, I highly recommend Armando Gallo's book "I know what I like" It was writen in the early 1980's but it give a rich history of all the members of the band including Anthony Phillips. It also has a very interesting time line in the back which links different bands together - i.e. Bill Bruford playing with the band for a while after Peter Gabriel left and Phil went to being the front man, who was mainly known as being the drummer for Yes and for King Crimson. - Maeve, Cincinnati, OH
does anyone know the name of the drummer mike and tony got to replace phil collins, after collins went off on his solo career?
thanks! - janina, san leandro, CA
very underrated band - Don, Philadelphia, PA
