| They played their first show at a former church that was serving as a halfway house for alcoholics (appropriately enough) under the name the Impediments. Their show was so horrible, they were told they would never get another gig anywhere. They changed their name to The Replacements, in effect "replacing" the original name. |
| Once, when asked who they were replacing, Paul Westerberg is said to drunkenly declared "Everyone." |
| One of Paul Westerberg's favorite targets when the Replacements were together was Axl Rose. Heads were sent spinning when Tommy Stinosn, former Mats bass player, was given the job of bassist for Guns 'N' Roses. Westerberg has cited Rose's impossible demands as a reason the Replacements have been unable to reunite, although he has never been big on the idea himself. This is one of the bands that I was listening to in the 1989. Years later grunge and post grunge rock reminded me of them occasionally. They were way ahead of their time, afraid of succeeding, and never lived up to their potential. Can you say Foo Fighters? - ryan, birmingham, AL |
First of all, Bob Stinson did not die from a drug overdose. He was no saint, and years of drug abuse and health issues are what caused his early death. A syringe was found in his appartment at the time of his death (his roomate was a diabetic) and the myth was born. The Hennepin County cororner report did not list any heroin in his system at the time of his death.
Westerberg used to walk by the Stinson house everyday on the way to his janitor job, and would stand outside and listen to Bob, Tommy, and Chris jamming in the basement. He never had the guts to go up to the house though. Then one day, his friend said they were going to jam with some of his other friends, and brought Paul over to the Stinson house. They originally had a different lead singer (the band at the time was called "Dogbreath"), but Paul told the singer that the band wasn't really into him (not true), and then told the band that the singer wanted out(not true either). So he "took over" the role of singer in the band, and the Replacments were effectively born. - Mister Whirly, Minneapolis, MN |
Actually when Westerberg was asked what they were replacing he replied "Everything" and not "Everyone" - Mister Whirly, Minneapolis, MN |
In response to the comment from Ken, Dupont, PA:
the drummer, Chris Mars, I wouldn't consider "ugly". Not only is he a great drummer but a great painter. Check out http://www.chrismarspublishing.com/Frame.htm
to see his paintings - Dan, Davis, CA |
Another reason the band has been unable to reunite is that guitarist Bobby Stinson died in 1995, from an apparent drug overdose. Too bad...this kid was good!! - Ken, Dupont, PA |
