... usually result in a hit single and another platinum plaque to add to her collection. And she's not alone. Pop music has had a long love affair with the kiss-off song, and some 40 years before Swift delivered the sugary delicacy "I Knew You Were Trouble," singer-songwriter and 70s icon Carly Simon
, was doing the same with her signature single, 1972's "You're So Vain." Combining the power of two jilted ex-girlfriends, Swift surprised audiences at her July 27 Red Tour stop at Foxborough, Mass., not far from Martha's Vineyard, where Simon has long called home. Like Swift's "Dear John," "Last Kiss" and "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together," the unknown person in Simon's hit was the subject of much speculation when the song shot up the charts. But in this performance, the two seem to be singing past flames everywhere. Watch the duo's dazzling performance below: Taylor Swift & Carly Simon

Taylor Swift Now Knows Carly Simon's 'You're So Vain' Secret
... (Radio.com) This past weekend in Foxboro, Mass., Taylor Swift joined a very exclusive club. It's the small club of people who (allegedly) know whom Carly Simon
's song "You're So Vain" is actually, truly about. And no, she's not telling. The occasion came about when Swift invited Simon to sing her iconic 1972 hit song on stage with her during the Red Tour's stop in at Gillette Stadium on Saturday (July 27). It was an experience Swift called "unreal." Swift was thrilled to get a chance to perform classic song alongside its creator. "I think tonight is one of the most special nights on the tour," she said in a video interview shot backstage at the July 27th show. Swift tweeted, "Got to sing 'You're So Vain' with Carly Simon
at Gillette Stadium tonight!!!!! Unreal. I could not possibly look up to her more." Swift also had high praise for the song itself. "That is the most direct way that anyone has ever addressed a breakup," she said. "It's amazing." And Swift, of course, knows a thing or two about such matters, being a songwriter herself who's made a career out of "direct" songs that touch on, among other things, relationships and breakups. Carly is the daughter of Richard Simon, who owned part of the publishing company Simon and Schuster. When she shopped her demo tape, Clive Davis at Columbia Records turned her down and she went to Elektra. She understands how Davis could miss this one, as her father turned down publishing the book Gone With The Wind.
She won the Grammy for Best New Artist of 1971.
When Carly was in Los Angeles recording her Hotcakes album, she and James Taylor lived in the house that was later owned by OJ Simpson. She has commented that seeing it on TV during all of the coverage was quite surreal. The house has since been demolished and a new home built in its place.
On the cover of her Hotcakes album, Carly is pregnant with her daughter Sally. (thanks, karen - olympia, WA, for above 2)
She went to Sarah Lawrence college, and during this time performed with her sister as The Simon Sisters.
